Described as the process of bringing one’s psychological attention to fully experience the present moment, through meditation and other activities, mindfulness was traditionally used by Buddhist followers to develop wisdom, self-knowledge and, ultimately, enlightenment.

Today mindfulness and meditation are used to enhance psychological health and mental welbeing. Mindfulness practice has been used to reduce stress, anxiety, depressive symptoms, and is often used in the treatment of drug addition and psychosis.

But you don’t need to suffer from a mental illness to benefit from mindfulness and meditation. In addition to the treatment of anxiety and depression, mindfulness has been shown to assist with the development of self-awareness; increase the ability to manage stress; improve overall physical and psychological health; reduce tension, anger and fatigue; enhance relationships; increase vitality; improve sleep quality and enhance immunity.

Some schools, including Gorey Community School, run day-long and weekend mindfulness retreats. Courses are added at other schools in our network from time to time. Check out links to your local schools on our homepage for the most up-to-date course lists. YogaTai Chi, Qi Qong or other physical mind-body exercises can be used to enhance mindfulness. You’ll find courses in those activities at many of our schools.
