French is spoken as a first language in France; Quebec, Ontario and other Francophone regions of Canada; Brussels and the Wallonia regions of Belgium; Western Switzerland; Monaco and parts of Luxembourg.

It is also widely spoken in many countries of North, West and Central Africa.

French is also the most widely taught foreign language in the EU and the second most studied language worldwide.

Those travelling and working in France will find at least a confident grasp of the basics will greatly enhance their experience.

Even if you haven’t spoken French since the Junior (or Inter) Cert, or have only picked up a few phrases from travelling in France or Francophone countries, you’ll be surprised how quickly you gain confidence and expand your vocabulary.

The emphasis in most adult education evening language classes is on the spoken language. You’ll pick up useful words and phrases, and be encouraged to gain confidence using them in a fun and relaxed environment.

Expect a lot of role play and verbal practice, and not too much grammar nit-picking or reciting classic French literature!
