The ukulele is a small string instrument commonly associated with music from Hawaii. The instrument developed in the 1880s and is based on several small guitar-like instruments of Portuguese origin. It was introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by Portuguese immigrants. Singer and comedian George Formby was perhaps the most famous ukulele player in this part of the world. George Harrison was also a huge fan of the instrument. Popularity of the instrument continues to grow, and the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain tour globally.
