QQI Level 5 Certificate in Healthcare Support Assistant (5M4339)
The Level 5 Healthcare Support programme provides training in all aspects of healthcare support and prepare participants for jobs in the expanding healthcare sector, including positions in nursing homes, hospitals, day care centres or in private home care. Over the course of two years part-time study, participants will gain the skills, knowledge, competence and confidence required to work in this sector. Course participants take a broad range of Healthcare Support modules resulting in a full major award at QQI Level 5, with each highly practical and relevant module focusing on a specific area of care.
Upon completing of the Level 5 award, participants will have gained an understanding of the needs of the older person in relation to maintenance of their dignity, self-esteem, independence and choice; developed the practical, caring, intellectual and communication skills required to effectively respond to the needs of the older person with empathy; learned about the current and emerging legislation that applies to the care of the older person; been made aware of the need of professional and personal development while working with older people and their families; and gained an understanding of the various healthcare environments, including hospital, community and residential care settings, and had specific learning of their chosen setting.
In addition to compulsory core modules in Care Support (5N0758); Safety and Health at Work (5N1794) and Care Skills (5N2770), and a Work Placement or Work Practice module, participants will undertake a choice of modules for a broad range of child, community, disability older patients options, including the popular Care of the Older Person module (5N2706) and the module in Palliative Care Support (5N3769). The choice varies from delivery centre to delivery centre, with most schools in our organisation offering older patient and palliative care options. Check modules offered before signing up to a course.
Modules can also be undertaken as stand-alone minor awards. Upon successfully completion of this major award, learners may progress to a range of different awards, including the Level 6 award in Health Services Supervisory Management Skills.
Level 5 Certificate in Nursing Studies (5M4349)
The Level 5 certificate in Nursing Studies prepares the learner for work in a variety of health care settings and further studies in nursing. While often serving as a pre-nursing course for those who don't yet have the qualifications to get into third-level education, it is a qualification in its own right where participants are introduced to a wide variety of nursing and health modules along with a work placement, during which they will have the opportunity to work in a setting of their choice under supervision. By the end of the programme successful participants will understand the role and responsibilities of the Professional Nurse and/or be able to work as a Healthcare Assistant in hospitals, nursing homes, and daycare centers.
The course is made up of core/compulsory modules in Anatomy and Physiology (5N0749); Human Growth and Development (5N1279) and Nursing Theory and Practice (5N4325), a module in either Care Provision and Practice or Care Skills, a period of work placement or work practice and a at least one elected module from a broad range of nursing topics.
Modules can also be undertaken as stand-alone minor awards. Upon successfully completion of this major award, learners may progress to a range of different awards, including the Level 6 award in Health Services Supervisory Management Skills. The programme also prepares the students for progression to third level colleges, where they can study nursing, along with a range of other related subjects.
Level 5 Certificate in Community Care (5M2786)
The Level 5 Community Care assistant award equips participants looking to work in the community, in hospitals or residential care or in childcare settings, with the knowledge and skills to care for individuals in a safe and empathetic manner. Participants will learn about the roles and responsibilities of the care worker while acquiring the practical skills required for work in care settings. Over the course of two-years part-time study, participants will gain an appreciation and understanding of nursing process models of care, nursing ethics and etiquette in care situations. Learners will also have the opportunity to enhance their communication skills and further their personal development.
In addition to the compulsory core modules in Human Growth and Development (5N1279); Safety and Health at Work (5N1794) and Care Provision and Practice (5N2705) and the period of work-based placement or practice, learners will undertake stimulating and practical modules in their choice of a variety of health and social care topics.
Modules can also be undertaken as stand-alone minor awards. Upon successfully completion of this major award, learners may progress to a range of different awards, including the Level 6 award in Health Services Supervisory Management Skills.
Level 6 Certificate in Health Services Supervisory Management Skills (6M4978)
The Level 6 QQI award in Health Services Supervisory Managment Skills aims to prepare learners for a career in Ireland or abroad as a senior care assistants with supervisory responsibilities in a hospital, nursing home, or day care centre. It is suitable for learners who already have a QQI level 5 major award in Healthcare Support, Health Service Skills, Nursing Studies or equivalent looking to pursue a career in a supervisory role as a Health Care Assistant in a hospital, nursing home or other healthcare setting.
The programme of study, which normally takes two years part-time to complete includes core/mandatory components in Conflict Management (6N2775) and Supervisory Management (6N4329), along with a period of work placement or professional and personal development, and four electives from a broad range of management, workplace and healthcare options.
Successful participants will understand the role and responsibilities of a supervisor, will have developed good communication and interpersonal skills, possess the appropriate work practices for a supervisor role in the health care sector, and will have acquired a range of supervisory and management skills. Modules can also be undertaken as stand-alone minor awards. Upon completion of the Level 6 award, learners will have the opportunity to higher education training and education.
