QQI Level 5 Animal Care Courses
The purpose of the QQI Level 5 major award in Animal Care (5M2768) is to enable participants to acquire the skills, knowledge and competence to provide for the needs of animals in a range of animal care settings, or to progress to further or higher education or training.
Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to demonstrate a broad range of knowledge in relation to animal husbandry techniques; understand the needs of a range of small animals and how to provide for those needs in accordance with recommended best practice; demonstrate judgement in determining and responding to the care needs of a range of animals; contribute responsibly and effectively as a member of an animal care team; comply with legislation and guidelines in the care of animals.
All course participants will complete the core modules in Animal Anatomy and Physiology (5N0750) and Animal Welfare (5N0753), a period of work placement or work practice and at least three elective modules from a choice of specific topics, including Animal Behaviour, Animal Grooming, Veterinary Assisting Skills, and Small Animal Husbandry and Housing. The options available vary depending on the course delivery site, so it is advised the applicants check the options available before signing up to the course.
Following completion of the course, successful participants can progress to a variety of other courses, including the QQI Level 6 Certificate in Animal Science, and are eligible to apply through CAO and or the Higher Education Links Scheme to a range of higher certificate and degree programmes – including in veterinary nursing and agricultural science - at Universities and Institutes of Technology. Successful graduates may also find work in veterinary clinics, dog kennels, catteries, pet shops, animal sanctuaries, or dog grooming studios.
