Learn about counselling and counselling skills
Counselling is a kind of talking therapy or psychological therapy which involves and individual sharing their worries, feelings, concerns and issues with an empathetic, non-judgmental professional, who has been trained to listen and question in a way that will encourage the client to both share their stories, and find solutions to their own problems. Considerable skills, developed over a prolonged period of time, are required to create a productive therapeutic relationship in the professional setting, but we can all benefit from basic counselling (read: listening) skills in our everyday interactions.
If you would like to find out more about counselling theory and practice, acquire some of the skills involved in therapeutic listening, and explore if a career in counselling is for you, then a short Introduction to Counselling course might be a good place to start. During a typical eight or ten week course you will look at some of the basic theories and principles of counselling, be guided through counselling practice and skills and develop an understanding of how those skills can be applied in a variety of everyday interactions with adults, adolescents and children. You will understand more about what counselling is and how it differs from other talking therapies and self-awareness activities. The focus will be on experiential learning through group participation and interaction.
While undertaking an introductory course won't lead to any qualifications, parents, teachers care workers, and managers will learn skills that they will find useful in their everyday interactions with others. Those interested in undertaking further studies in the field will gain a good foundation in counselling theory and practice.
